A teleconference and webex was held on 28 October 2016. The working group's publication "Graphical display of histopathology data from toxicology studies for drug discovery and development: an industry survey" was accepted for publication in Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology immediately after submission, and without peer-review upon request by the journal editor. The paper first became available on-line on 18 October 2016. A Brown provided a preview of the in-press manuscript to the working group. R Ramesh and S Madhaven of PointCross provided an in-depth demonstration of sunburst plots of histopathology data based upon Krona, IGO and D3 software (which are open-source). The demonstration primarily utilized the ToxVision platform for managing the sunburst plot software. S Madhaven indicated that there are 6-dimensions (sex, dose, organ, finding, incidence, severity) or levels for histopathology data, and the sunburst plots can depict hierarchical data with a user interface that is highly interactive. Plots depicting data from 2 different studies were displayed simultaneously, which is an advantage for this technology. In addition, data from multiple studies can be aggregated and displayed in a single plot. Discussion centered around filtering or curating-out background or incidental lesions, dose-trend analyses and how incidence data are represented. The role of color, font angle and aesthetics were discussed. Findings can be filtered. Incidence data need to be converted to percentages to allow graphical display within the circle. Further evaluation of this type of graphics should occur by working group.
